Have you heard of Alkionides Mehres? Here is a cut from the old Skopelitissa:

A strange phenomena that
happens every winter. Days with unbelievable warm and calm weather, mostly in January, but could happen in December! In 2010 we probably had it around New Year; at New Years Eve we sat outside until 3,30 in the morning, – that has never happened before.
Why this; “From Latin Alcyone, daughter of Aeolus and wife of Ceyx. When her husband died in a shipwreck, Alcyone threw herself into the sea whereupon the gods transformed them both into halcyon birds (kingfishers). When Alcyone made her nest on the beach, waves threatened to destroy it. Aeolus restrained his winds and made the waves be calm during seven days in each year, so she could lay her eggs. These became known as the “halcyon days”, when storms never occur.”

– said Wikipedia

One of the stars of the Pleiades star cluster, named after the mythical character.

The kingfisher has been seen
in Blo, Panormos.

I really want some warmer weather!

When will the Alkyon Days be here?

Have a wonderful day and dream of sunny days on Skopelos!

  1. Hallo;

    Ett av dine bilder i dag fra Owl Bar 1987, vekket gamle minner til live, nemlig ved synet av Birger! Min mann og jeg tilbragte hvert år fra 1990 til 2003, da min mann døde, flere uker årlig på Skopelos, hvor vi ble kjent, bl.a. med Birger. Har vært tilbake på øya sammen med barn og barnebarn et par ganger etter den tid, men det begynner å bli lenge siden. Jeg setter stor pris siden din, og må si jeg lengter litt tilbake, da vi ble veldig glade i Skopelos. Vi hadde ofte med venner, som også var enstemmige enige i vår fascinasjon for øya og menneskene vi møtte. Men tilbake til Birger; det siste jeg vet om ham er at han bodde på Alonissos, men mye er sannsynligvis endret. Jeg hadde satt stor pris på om du ville ta deg tid til å sende meg noen ord. Hva med «gullsmed-dama» Peggy. Er fremdeles den noe spesielle fyren, Stergio på Roof Garden? Og en annen gullsmed, navnet er så vidt jeg husker, Tsiparis.

    Ser fram til ditt eventuelle svar!

    Mvh

    1. Hei og takk for hyggelig hilsen! Jeg heter Nana og eide Owl Bar en gang I tiden. Kjente vi hverandre?
      Birger lever fremdeles på Alonnisos, gift med en meget hyggelig og snill dame fra Ukraina. MEN han har kols og er ikke like sprek hver dag. Han har blitt gammel, men hvem har ikke det!
      Skopelos er like fin og deilig som alltid, tross Mamma Mia og en del styr, har Øen klart å forbli en Ø hvor du også treffer grekeren. En Ø ikke bare for turister!
      Håper å høre mer fra deg, hilsen Nana
